Boundary completion in illusory contours: Interpolation

چکیده

Most computational and neural-style models of contour completion (ie illusory and occluded contours) are based on interpolation: the filling in of an edge between two visible edges. The results of three experiments suggest an alternative conception, that units are formed as a result of extrapolation from visible edges. In three experiments, subjects reported illusory contours between standard illusory-contour inducing elements and forms that do not, by themselves, induce illusory contours. We suggest that these forms are not a special case of inducing elements but that they represent a different classöreceiving elements. Receiving elements are forms that can receive an illusory contour but cannot generate one, and they can alter contour formation. In experiment 1, receiving elements increased the judged clarity of illusory contours. In experiment 2, illusory edges were seen to connect to corners, line ends, and even the edges of circles. Boundary formation in motion displays also appears to be based on extrapolation. In experiment 3, subjects reported that small moving dots altered the formation of spatiotemporally defined boundaries. Implications for higher-order operator and network models of boundary formation are discussed. DOI:10.1068/p3420

Spatial and Temporal Properties of Illusory Contours and Amodal Boundary Completion

Spatial and temporal properties of illusory contours and amodal completion were investigated using a shape discrimination task. Performance was characterized as accuracy of angular discrimination of the inducing figures ("pacmen") in a two-alternative forced choice (2AFC) paradigm. First, we compared performance when four "pacmen" were organized into Kanizsa-like figures (squares and small defo...

A unified model of illusory and occluded contour interpolation

Models of contour interpolation have been proposed for illusory contour interpolation but seldom for interpolation of occluded contours. The identity hypothesis (Kellman & Loukides, 1987; Kellman & Shipley, 1991) posits that an early interpolation mechanism is shared by interpolated contours that are ultimately perceived as either illusory or occluded. Here we propose a model of such a unified ...

Electrophysiological Correlates of Similarity-based Interference during Detection of Visual Forms

Illusory figure completion demonstrates the ability of the visual system to integrate information across gaps. Mechanisms that underlie figural emergence support the interpolation of contours and the filling-in of form information [Grossberg, S., & Mingolla, E. Illusory contour perception and amodal boundary completion: evidence of a dissociation following callosotomy.

A fundamental problem in form perception is how the visual system can link together spatially separated contour fragments to form the percept of a unitary shape. Illusory contours and amodal completion are two phenomena that demonstrate this linking process. In the present study we investigate these phenomena in the divided hemispheres of two callosotomy ("split-brain") patients. The data sugge...

A Theoretical Analysis of Illusory Contour Formation in Stereopsis

A theoretical analysis of how illusory contours are formed in untextured stereograms is presented. This analysis focuses on the role of contour junctions in initiating surface interpolation processes. More specifically, this theory asserts that the matching geometry of stereoscopic junctions that is, the pattern of matchable and unmatchable features present at the intersection of binocularly vi...
